Description
In Piemontese dialect, “Costa” is the side of a hill that faces the sun. “Russi” was the nickname of the previous owner of this site, which is also known as Roncagliette. The Gajas purchased this vineyard on the south edge of town in 1967, when Angelo was only 27. Costa Russi emerged as a single-vineyard wine in 1978, and quickly became known for its arresting perfume and finesse. Because it contains 5% Barbera this wine is not legally entitled to the Barbaresco DOCG, which requires 100% Nebbiolo.
On the nose, the 2010 Gaja Costa Russi is refined with well-integrated notes of blackberries, violets and roasted coffee beans. Supple and seductive to the palate, this is a full-bodied wine with cohesive tannins leading to a clean, fresh finish.
